Return of the ‘Welfare Queen’

(CNN) — She’s out there, lurking in the 2012 presidential race like a horror movie villain who refuses to die.

She has 12 Social Security cards, mooches on benefits from four fake dead husbands, and collects food stamps while driving a Cadillac. She rakes in about $150,000 a year in welfare benefits and, of course, people assume she must be African-American.

President Ronald Reagan gave America a sunny “Morning in America” optimism, but he also gave it the “Welfare Queen,” an infamous character who has re-emerged in this year’s presidential race.

Critics have accused the three leading Republican presidential candidates of resurrecting Reagan’s Welfare Queen by calling President Obama the “food stamp president,” implying that blacks live off other people’s money, and by declaring that America is moving toward an “entitlement society.”

Yet few people have examined the story behind the birth of the Welfare Queen. Did she really exist? Why do people still talk about her when welfare ended 15 years ago? Can her story still swing voters at a time when the great recession has forced more whites to rely on government assistance?

For some, the Welfare Queen is an epic political lie. Reagan invented her, and Americans keep buying the lie.

“It’s one of those persistent symbols that come up every election cycle,” says Kaaryn Gustafson, author of “Cheating Welfare: Public Assistance and the Criminalization of Poverty.”

“This image of the lazy African-American woman who refuses to get a job and keeps having kids is pretty enduring. It’s always been a good way to distract the public from any meaningful conversations about poverty and inequality. ”

Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson Agrees With Newt Gingrich, Says He Would Send Blacks Back ‘To The Plantation’

The Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, the super-conservative African American Republican who has campaigned vigorously against Kwanzaa (“The Racist Holiday From Hell” he has called it), the Rev. Jesse Jackson Jr. and President Barack Obama, said he has a simple solution to black America’s employment woes: hard labor.

“One of the things that I would do is take all black people back to the South and put them on the plantation so they would understand the ethic of working,” Peterson told The Huffington Post’s Black Voices on Tuesday afternoon. “I’m going to put them all on the plantation. They need a good hard education on what it is to work.”

Peterson made the remarks after he was asked to comment on Monday night’s sparring between moderator Juan Williams and Newt Gingrich, during the Republican presidential debate after Williams asked Gingrich whether he thought his recent statements suggesting a lack of work ethic among poor black kids could be viewed as insulting.

“People don’t want to hear the truth,” said Peterson, the founder of the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny, or BOND. “Newt was 100 percent correct,” Peterson said. “Newt said that he would have black children, minority children work as janitors at school. Working as a janitor would build character, more so than the handouts so many of them like.”

“I know some people take it personally because a whole lot of folks don’t like hearing the truth; they like to be in denial,” he added. “Not all black people, but most black people know, and white people know, and black people say it more in private than they would in public, but for the last 50 years or so, generations and generations of black people have relied on the government or someone else to take care of them.”

Red Tails

There are only so many chances we black folk get to play roles of significance in major Hollywood films. I know what you’re thinking: “But Blog-writer, I can’t help but watch Halle Berry in the role that made her career whenever it comes on TV. “BAPS” was my shit.” My response would be that I’m not talking about those BET Blackbusters that come on, or the leading roles many Black folk play in episodes of “Cops.” What I’m talking about are major motion pictures that get national distribution. And I mean movies where a majority of the cast is Black. This really narrows things down to “Pride,” “The Great Debaters,” “Stomp the Yard,” and precious few others. Well, the Black community has been a-buzz with news about the new George Lucas-produced film “Red Tails.”

GPS (Ghetto Public Service) App

When I first read this article I wanted to believe that this app was not entirely consumed with racism, but slightly bigoted. However, it’s filled with prejudice and discrimination against the lower class. The app was made to reduce traffic into “economically challenged areas populated by individuals who generally travel by walking.”  The inventor of the app sought to seize accidental encounters into what some people describe as the ghetto. Although the ghetto may be seem as a place filled with gang violence, crime and drug usage, it is also a place with businesses that need to prosper. How can a community develop without the proper resources it needs? This app, if popularized, will ultimately result in less economic opportunities for these already struggling neighborhoods, perpetuating the cycle that is already prevalent within these impoverished area.

The inventor of the app must be from Memphis

I can respect the idea of making a buck; however, I refuse to accept a capitalist idea established to (intentionally or) unintentionally cripple the working poor. To deter individuals from these neighborhoods is TO unapologetically ignore the living conditions within these communities. Each major religion advocates for the assistance of the down-trodden and ignoring these principles is truly blasphemous. Closing your eyes on the problem does not change the situation, nor does re-routing your GPS.

Aubrey vs Lonnie

Seriously, who would win between a dude named Lonnie and a dude named Aubrey. One guy sings and the other one wears Cosby sweaters and kangols.

Personally, I despise Drake for the simple reason that he is a simp. One moment he claiming “he don’t love ’em”  and the next moment he’s in “Marvin’s Room.” The rumor is Marvin’s Room is actually dedicated to Serena Williams’ relationship with Common.  I ain’t mad at it and it wouldn’t be the first time two men fought over a woman

I think Lonnie is gonna win this one. First of all Canada has never been #1 in anything. Drizzy has too much estrogen and relies too much in “his team” to ever compare to Common. However, Common is the same dude that ended a diss track with a sample of the “Say My Name.”

Ultimately, it’s a lose/lose for Comm. If you fight someone beneath your class and beat him you gain no respect. But if Drake gets a few good licks in on Common this will look a lot like a Kobe/Chris Child stunner. My advice to Common is  just  to make a phone call to immigration and get Drake out of Miami and back in Toronto.

Adventures of Awkward Black Girl

So, I just caught onto this series called The Misadventures of the Awkward Black Girl about three days ago, and I am already hooked! Writer/Director Issa Rae definitely nailed the struggle of awkward black women, and I found myself glued to my computer screen after finding this episode. I’ve since gone back and watched the entire series, and she has me biting my nails for the Season Finale, which will premiere Thursday, January 12.

Let me know what you think, ladies and gents. Trust me, you’ll be satisfied!

Nigga In Northface

Honestly, I don’t know how to completely feel about this video. Personally, I love my sistas and everything, but I have never seen or heard the perspective of an interracial couple. Of course, I have watched Jungle Fever and I know some interracial couples, but not enough to see the inner workings of this type of relationship. After watching this clip, I’m sure you will feel differently about black-white relationships. I know I did. I came to the conclusion that the love of one group is not necessarily the hate of another. Biblically, Moses was interracially maried to his wife. So if God doesn’t have a problem with it, then why should I???

Utimately, I love Black women! I love everything about them from the way they talk, to the way they are shaped and the way they think. I truly believe my soul-mate is a sista. I imagine my wife to be a combination of Sanaa Lathan in Brown Sugar, Love & Basketball, The Wood, and Something New.

Yeah, I Know I'm Trippin'

Welcome Baby Jayonce’ Illuminati Carter to the World!!!

On January 7, 2012, Queen Bey and Jay-Hova sauntered into Lenox Hill hospital and left with  this little alien child baby girl Blue Ivy Carter. This has been the consistent story from every major news source, but from here the story has differed. It is rumored that the power couple bought the entire fourth floor in honor of their favorite number. I, personally, believe that this child was made the old-fashion way, through misogyny, manipulation, and money…you know the good ole days. However, there is a rumor that there is a surrogate mother but no one seems to know the name or alias of this controversial young lady. Beyonce’ under the pseudonym Ingrid Jackson was said to have checked into Room 444, located in the Burn Unit, which causes us to question if the baby was badly injured en route to the hospital or just resembles her biological father. Read Here For More…
