Tavis Smiley Aims To Put Poverty On 2012 Election Agenda

“Two decades ago we were celebrating what was the Year Of The Woman in ’92, and now we’re dealing with a war on women in 2012,” Tavis Smiley said on a recent afternoon.

Smiley rattles off some numbers.

“Women are much more likely to be poor than men, and more than a million children have fallen into poverty, and more than 500,000 have fallen into extreme poverty” — that is, living on less than $2 a day — “since 2010.”

Recent census data shows that the number of children who live in extreme poverty has doubled from 1996 to 2011, from 1.4 million to 2.8 million.

To draw attention to this problem, Smiley is moderating a televised symposium Sunday called “Made Visible: Women, Children and Poverty In America” at New York University. Smiley said that he consciously assembled a panel that would feature women from diverse backgrounds since he felt that so much of the recent conversation around women’s issues in America — he specifically referred to the recent fight in Congress over insuring female contraception — included few women’s voices.

13 Things The Bible Forbids Other Than Homosexuality (That You’re Probably Guilty Of Doing)

Late last week Kirk Cameron gave a now infamous interview on “Piers Morgan Tonight” during which he discussed his feelings about homosexuality and marriage equality.

Cameron, a “devoted follower of Jesus Christ,” stated that homosexuality is “unnatural… I think that it’s detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.” He added, “Marriage was defined by God a long time ago. Marriage is almost as old as dirt, and it was defined in the garden between Adam and Eve — one man, one woman for life till death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage.”

This isn’t the first time that the Bible has been used to justify anti-gay rhetoric.

When claiming that the Bible forbids homosexuality, most people point to Leviticus 18:22 which reads, “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is an abomination.”

But others have argued that the passage is merely one of many archaic religious laws that are no longer relevant to today’s modern times and do not need to be upheld.

Below are 13 other things that the Bible forbids. How many are you guilty of doing?

Occupy Joseph Kony?

If you haven’t heard of Joseph Kony given the recent social media storm over him then you’re probably living under a rock or are still using AOL discs to dial up to the internet. In either case, I admire your dedication to checking this site given the evident technical difficulties. All jokes aside, if you at least want to know why people are talking about Joseph Kony, then check out the website for the Invisible Children organization and watch the video there. While I have concerns about the video and the nature of the information that is out there, at the very least you’ll know why people are dedicated to stopping Kony, although the video is kind of empty on facts or context (more on that later). Or you could just listen to my interpretation of the facts. Joseph Kony is a bad guy. He’s the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army, a transnational military-political group that operates across central Africa (including Uganda, and South Sudan) and uses brutality to pursue ends that aren’t quite clear to outsiders. They claim, however, to be a theocratic government wishing to establish a government based on the Ten Commandments in the region. The irony in this very claim is the fact that they use extreme acts of violence in pursuit of this “end,” including mass murders, mutilation, enslavement and sexual enslavement, and the use of child soldiers, which form the bulk of their military force.
